anyone interested in purchasing 95 montero LS

I was wondering if anyone out there might be interested in purchasing a 95 Montero LS - I absolutely love the vehicle but there's one problem and no one can figure out what it is. I wrote the thread on starving for fuel a few back, so check it out - maybe there's a mechanic or someone who enjoys working on vehicles, is in the market, and might be interested. Other than that, it's never left me stranded, if the engine is turned off and on again it runs perfectly. Only happens about once a month.

Hi there!

Seems like your giving up on your truck. Wonder what happened to all the enthusiasm of trying to put her back into shape.

2 cents: the problem on your SUV could either be both mechanical or electrical, but definitely fuel related. I don't know if you are a DIY (do it yourself) but maybe not because of your present physical condition but should you have the time or friends/family who would like to think thru whats absolutely wrong with the car, I would recommend the following:

1. Inspect fuel delivery - this includes the inside condition of your fuel tank (is it clean or rusted inside), the fuel line itself (for leaks or possible areas where you may loose fuel pressure), your fuel pump (could be internal inside the tank), the plastic filter/strainer before the fuel pump), the external fuel filter (the can may be clogged by dirt which either came from your tank or the fuel you load), and lastly, check the quality of fuel you have as it is highly possible too that you have water on your fuel tank.

All this may take a day as you need to take down the fuel tank and see clearly.

2. Check electricals related to the delivery of fuel
a. hows the output pressure of your electric fuel pump? High PSi is required for an EFi engine. I could be wrong, but the Montero is equipped with an electric pump (internal to the tank).
b. check the wiring too...terminals could be developing rust and loosing contact
c. check electric fuel pump relay or even fuse box terminal and search for the fuse of your electric fuel pump

The reason why I believe that the problem remains to be fuel related is because of its being intermittent in nature, and how after a certain period, the car engine comes back to life. I am leaving it open for other possibilties, but I remember having a problem similar in nature where by after a period, my engine dies and when I let the engine rest, it firesback. Had nothing to do withthe engine....the fuel tank was clogged with dirt and with constant running of the electric fuel pump, it was slowly gathering the dirt and was accumulating on the filters until it reaches the point wherein the filters was so covered with dirt/rust/grime, the pump could not suck enough thats why the engine dies or the pump is only able to supply fuel enough to sustain its idling.

Really appreciate the info - no, I'm not a DIY (although I've learned a lot about my truck b/c of this) but having that info might be very helpful. As of right now, I've installed a new TPS and had it adjusted to the proper position (the 2nd one I installed was not adjusted correctly I believe.) It seems to be running very well now - and I'd like to think that the problem has been solved - it's been about a month and I've driven in the rain and a thunderstorm or two w/ no probs. So I might just hold onto it a little longer. (If it acts up again, I might try to look @ some of the things you suggested.)

What has happened in the past month, however, (and has happened well before that intermittant starving of fuel started) is that all my dashbd lights (brake light, ABS light, battery light, and the other one) come on and sometimes they stay on and sometimes they flash a bit. All the while the truck is running perfectly. No check engine light, though. This is also an intermittant flashing, no rhyme or reason to them lighting up, has only happened 2 times in the past month.

I'm beginning to think my truck is a female, like myself, and has as many hormones running through it as I have right now!

Sounds good then...and with the new TPS, I hope that solves it.

On the indicators lighting up...definitely electrical in nature. Should it happen again, turn your radio off and pay attention to any sound similar to a "metal to metal" switch coming together, either when the lights go on or off. With this process, what you will be looking for is a relay intermittently loosing contact and gaining it.

If its not acting up, then your safe, and hopefully it stays that way long.

well, i believe i finally fixed my problem. after having the tps adjusted, the truck seems to be running fine.

I am however, going to sell it b/c we just decided it was time for a minivan - w a growing family and all, so if anyone's interested...

I can try to get a picture but not until daylight - 125,000 miles, silver, power locks/windows, 4x4, CD player, silver,...

There are a couple of things that need looking @ - small leak in front windshield (when it rains) probably just needs to have the seal fixed, small points of rust beginning on the body which I have painted over already, some sort of problem causing coolant to leak (don't know what it is), some exhaust type of smells here and there.

It's a really good vehicle, just that's it's 10 yrs old and I'm thinking it's @ that age where it might need more tlc than I can afford - I'm not a mechanic and certainly not a do-it-yourselfer. It's a sharp looking vehicle. I put new tires on it last Nov (03), replaced and adjusted the tps in June of this year, and had the fuel tank and those attachments repaired (can't remember what it's called but it connects the fuel tank to the fuel pump.)

Like I mentioned earlier, we're in the market for a minivan, growing family and all, don't have time or want to worry about a vehicle.
