I have a 99 Sunfire with roughly 100K miles on it. The odometer is stuck on tripometer and will not switch back so I have no idea how many miles are currently on the car. I had the dealer disconnect the battery to see if it would "default" back to the odometer. No such luck. I need to get this fixed so I can get my car inspected. Any idea how much it will cost? The dealer didn't have time to diagnose any further and would like to get an idea of the cost before I take it back.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

Sounds like you need to replace your speed sensor. The part will probably cost about $180 (not including labor charges to install it).
Edit: I wouldn't get it done at a dealer, unless you like getting ripped off.

Thanks for replying. I never got my fixed. Someone told me it might be the gauge cluster too (as Pontiac's are known to start having electrical problems at around 90K miles) so I looked into the cost of replacing that: it's a dealer only item and costs about 500 bucks. Also they need your car for a week to take out the odometer, send it back to have a new one reset to the actual mileage, and then they put the new one in.
Please let me know what your boyfriend finds out. I'm trying to sell mine too but can't until I get the stupid odometer working. Funny...my dad slammed the dashboard several times hoping that only a connection was loose but on luck! |

Re: 99 Sunfire Odometer Out
I heard that for the odometer not working in sunfires it could be a pink wire that goes from the cigarette lighter holster to the computer.
