Hi , my civic 88 1.5L. wants more horses, if I put:
cam pulley, cranck pulley, and power pulleys (aall this from unortodox), Air cold intake, iridium spark plugs, nology wires, new clutch, How many horses is the gain? And some know the price of one ligthened flywheel and the gain on horse power. And information about the rigth clutch?? I want to get about 180 hp or more, without a turbo or swap engine, please help me to do this. Maybe an MSD 6A could help ? Thanks |

Re: modifications
Wow... well, unless you do some serious rebuilding it will be pretty hard to get those numbers from a 1.5. But, yeah, you can get a few horses from the cam, gear and pulleys because supposedly the crank works faster. You gotta keep an eye on your electronics though. I've heard many stories of people with pulleys killing their cars cuz the alternator won't charge the battery fast enough. In my case, it was bad mechanics, not parts. I now have a lightened flywheel and exedy street/strip clutch but the gains are not very noticeable even though I've balanced out the engine dynamics on both sides. Here are some links though...

Re: modifications
yea you will need alot more than that if you want to damn near double the amount of HP the motor is currently producing. all those mods you mentioned youd be lucky to break 105hp.

Just my input, DO NOT get a lightened crank pully (or any pullies for that matter) your car will not last more than 10k more miles with them on.
The greatest poweradder you could do to your 1.5l is the MPFI swap. the tech article is on http://www.4thgenerationcivic.com/ then do the bolton thing and youll end up with low 100's....110 if your lucky (this is bhp, not whp)

Re: modifications
I have to call BS on that one, dude... sorry. I've been using the Unorthodox pulleys on my ride for 40,000+ miles and still going strong...

the light crank pulley is 4 times lighter than the stock, which means youve removed that much weight from a balanced rotating assembly. This frys your bearings. Ask my sis. Her engine siezed from the fucked up bearings after about 15k of hard driving on her old civic. Her engine had 50k miles on it. Theres no way the bearings could have looked like they did w/o something adding to the damage.

Re: modifications
That makes sense I guess, cuz my tranny bearings fried up but the tranny had 181k miles when I replaced them at the time of installing my ACT streetlite flywheel and Exedy clutch. But I still drove the car to the shop. Hopefully, the rotating mass is more equal now with the lighter flywheel... perhaps I should've gotten the 8lb. one
Eventually, I'm just going to use the rex for weekend abuse anyway.

you have a standard hatch (since you havea 4 speed). The best two mods you can do to it are swap in an 88-91 civic/crx si 5 speed tranny and do the mpfi swap. Thatll drop close to 3 seconds off your quarter mile

Re: modifications
headers won't help a whole lot, they help more with the more power you have.

Re: modifications
Your sisters car had an aftermarket crank pulley, then bearing problems shortly after and you assume that the crank pulley was the downfall of her engine then????
