Will using regular octane fuel harm my Mercedes?

Will using regular octane fuel harm my 2001 Mercedes? Believe it or not, I have been using regular fuel for 6 months and just realized today that I should be using premium. I haven't had any issues with my car since I purchased it 6 months ago (I purchased it pre-owned.)

Well, I not an expert on that but you should run on premium because your not getting the full performance of the car. Plus it can ruin your engine in the future.

Re: Will using regular octane fuel harm my Mercedes?

Most cars today have sensors that can detect the octane of the fuel you put in. This allows the vehicle to "tune" itself to work with the low-octane fuel.
But since lower octane fuel doesn't resist shock as good as high octane fuel, so it would be best to put in the fuel recomended by manufacturers.
The sensor is in the car as a safety device, not something that let people save money at the pump.

mbz wants you to use premium because the pressure in the cumbustion chamber could become to much so then the engine would misfire (the gas would explode before the spark gets to it) which will make an uncanny sound and could wreck your engine down the road so if at all possible stay with premimium.

benz motors have a high compression ratio. if you dont use high octane gas, you will get spark knock or pinging, not a good thing. also, your cars performance will suffer greatly.

ive never heard of any sensor to determine the octane of fuel and im not sure that is accurate.
