Unhappy 93 geo wont run help......

I have a 93 geo metro i tried to start it today and it wont start i checked the spark and i have spark then i checked the fuel filter and it is fine and im getting fuel to the carb but it wont run right. when you start it it works ok on the fast idle as soon as it goes to the low idle it dies like it is getting no gas. or if you just mash the gas on it dies as if it gets no gas if you pump the gas peddle it will run but otherwise it wont

ive seen this before. it can be several things, but of the ones ive seen are.....

1. a vacuum leak (as suggested above)

2. if your engine is over 100,000 miles, metros are quick to slip a tooth on the timing belt if it needs replacing. this will cause the exact simptoms you said, have to hold the gas, runs if you pump it, dies, and dies if you slam the gas. this will usually have a distinctive change in the exhaust sound

3. check the entire ignition system. you can have spark to your plugs, but as the compression rises durring the compression stoke it will take about 8 times more energy to bridge the gap in your plugs than what it will outside of your engine. check for a clean distributor, worn or old wires, and a weak coil. if the coil or the wires are bad, you will usually have spark, but not enough energy to run the engine without the help of inertia by reving up the engine.

4. check the charging system. if your battery is bad, it will starve the small alternator of all its energy trying to charge itself and leave little juice left to run the fuel injector or the fuel pump may loose pressure.

5. egr valve stuck open or closed

6. pcv valve clogged
