95 Gnd Caravan Transmission - stalls when put into any gear
1995 Dodge Grand Caravan, original owner, 89K miles. Feels like whatever is supposed to be controlling "clutch" isn't working. Drops into gear all at once, which if you aren't careful kills the engine. If you get going under load, transmission will drift out of gear, rev up, and then reengage. There is a whining noise when transmission is engaged.
Transmission oil level is a bit low, but no signs of leakage under the vehicle. No recent service done to transmission. Added one half quart ATF-3 to get into range. Did not remedy the problem. Oil is clear, bright, and red (from dipstick). I haven't taken the pan off yet. Any ideas before I take it to a transmission shop? Is there a method to differentiate whether the transmission control module or the solenoid module has gone bad? Thanks, Brian |

Re: 95 Gnd Caravan Transmission - stalls when put into any gear
When "this" tranny kills the engine, it is because the TCC(torque converter clutch) is "stuck on"
This is a mechanical malfunction. Also there is most likely excessive metal withing the hydralics of the tranny. Either the filter is plugged, the PR Valve is stuck, or its the torque converter making the noise. Good luck |

Hi Brian Have you had any luck with your converter lock up problems yet? I am having the same on a 97 Caravan. There don't seam to be very many suggestions about this one.
