Engine numbers

i have a 95 metro 3 cylinder. the question i have is should the numbers on the engine and trans match the vin on the car. neither of mine do the reason i ask is the guy that had it before me took the car to have a clutch put in it. shortly after that the trans started making noise. which is why i got the car he was afraid it would leave him stranded.

after i got the car i took the trans apart and replaced 2 bad bearings and it was obvious that the trans had been apart ie gasket sealant everywhere. he had this car since it had less than 20k on it. and he knew the people that had it before him . they bought it new and to their knowledge the trans have never been changed or apart.

so i was just wondering if the numbers should match because neither do. i know on domestic GM cars they all match. i have a feeling someone switched at least transmissions with him.

this info is more for the guy that had the car. he wants to know if he got screwed. since i fixed the trans it works perfect now. but i would like to find out.

thanks,
mike

Any factory car should have matching numbers. Sounds like he got screwed.
