valve timing

I recently changed the top timing gear and chain and tentioner and tentioning rail, while in the process my son pionted out to me that I let the chain skip one tooth or maby two we are not sure.
So with the crank @ tdc on #1 how do you tell if the valve timing is correct as there are no marks on the chain and none on the gear.

1982

1982 300 SD Inline 5 cyl turbo diesel S class I have been told that from 1981 thru 1995 the turbo diesel engines in all of these 300 SD (s) are all identical.

Re: valve timing

if you have power to the heater plugs(if fitted) i would remove them them and test individually, hows your fuse box?is it showing signs of corrosion-check all fuses for burnt/fragile ends/check on bulkhead next to battery for fuses(can be well hidden) and a right pain to get at.should go some way to heal the beast!

Re: valve timing

if only from cold it hard to start, perhaps fuel filter and/or lines are allowing fuel to drain back when left standing(hows the filter?)timer relay for glow plugs may have to short a duration,

Re: valve timing

the car has sat for about 90 days , but just 2 weeks pryor to that when the "cold start" problem began, I changed all of the fuel filters and glo plugs and did the timer test on the glo sys. All checked out good, thats when i replaced the timing chain, top gear, tensioning rail, tensioner, & front seal. the car runs better now than ever has < !! i mean WOW second gear rubber , but still hard to start up on that first start of the day no matter what time am or pm and it is hot here in Texas right now.

Re: valve timing

the man he say-glow plugs, remove and test each one, make sure all glow nicely-fuel draining back over night due to loose pipes/filter o ring faulty.sorry to repeat myself and put doubt on your hard work, but these must be 101% .glow plugs must power up for max 10 secs through ign, compression test on cylinders should be 24.0 to 30.0bar,have you checked valve clearances?
