Alternator removal issues

i just got my 89 probe gt turbo and im more then impressed, off the line launch and torque levels are awsome for a stock car ( many modifications soon to come ) but i have run into my first problem with this car. While out baggin around stretching the cars legs, i blew my alternator, i picked up a rebuilt alt today and started to tackle the removal of the blown one just as the Haynes guide book for my car explained, but now i cant seem to get the alternator out between the tie rod and the axle like the book explained, the only other option that i can maybe think of is removing the downpipe but one of the bolts seems to have been replaced somewhere along the line and doesnt seem to want to come out that easy, anyone that has done this on their own, i would greatly apreciate your input or anyone that might have an idea as to another method of removal it would be greatly apreatiated

1989 Probe GT Turbo
2.2L 4cyl 12 valve
Mitsubishi 12v 70amp alternator
stock exhaust

if any other specs are required just ask, but the car is bone stock to my knowledge

Re: Alternator removal issues

According to the specs for the 92 probe GT with turbo same engine..you need to drop the cat converter and it's pipe out of the way. Slide the alternator towards the drivers side and it comes out in that small gap that is created. Might just be better to see if ya can pull the halfshaft out and drop it down directly (who laid out this thing? Like ya wanna pull the motor to change an alternator?)

Yes I know this is an older post...but my g/f had alternator problems and that's the instructions the Haynes manual listed. Might be usefull for others.

edit: She's got an 80amp alternator with auto trannie...not sure if that would make a difference?
