Which model is best?

What are the models for 88 and 89 hatchbacks, just DX and LX? I am wondering because I am looking now for my next car, preferrably a clean EF hatch, and want to find the right model. I plan on buying a D16Y8 (1.6l sohc 96-00 EX vtec) and dumping in atleast 2 grand to build the motor for decent boost levels. I just want the lightest, most spartan model to plop in a turbo'd Y8 for a reliable, daily driven street machine. -PS- when people say HF civic, are they talking about a CRX, or is there a civic with that model code?

Re: Which model is best?

DX!

LX's aren't hatchbacks.

If they say HF, they're talking about the CRX HF.

Thanks SiZ. So DX is the only hatch from those days? I like the choppy looks of those 4th gens, EG's are soft.

Re: Which model is best?

Oh, are there any changes in standard features/specs from 1988 to 1989? Or are they pretty similar?

Re: Which model is best?

DX is the mid grade car nothing special sometimes a/c 1.5 motor, Si is the 1.6 There the "sports car" with sunroof, The hf if you plan on racing cause its lite but the motor was a 1.5 with 70hp would need motor swap. 88-91 was the years is there a reason you are sticking with 88-89? If you have a y8 great but as far as doing a motor swap the Z6 was a better motor because of the cam oil problems they had in the y8s cam would freeze due to lack of oil during vtec. Proven fact on 3 of my freinds y8s. So dont flame me. hehe nothing but facts baby

I wanted an 88 or 89 because I heard they were liter than 90 and 91's. I like the Y8 because it has ZC/Z6 power with a lower peak rpm. But if the Y8 is flawed, I could try finding a Z6. Also, the Y8's combustion chamber is asymetrical with more quench pad area, making it less prone to detonation and its head flows better at lo rpm for street aps. Didn't they make a STD model as the base EF hatchback?

Re: Which model is best?

really the 88-91 are the same weight if you strip them down. Its was more like the dx about the same. Honstly the z6 and the y8 blocks are the same its the heads that are differnt. yes the y8 has a little more power but if you do the z6 right you can get more power. Its really a personal thing I choose a Z6 or should I say it feel nto my lap for a good price.

Yeah man, Z6 can tear ass in top end power, and with the right gear ratios, who keeps their Civic in low revs anyways? I'll go to D-Series.org and ask about probs with the Y8 before I commit to it.

Chris, I think he was asking how you liked your engine naturally aspirated instead of forced induction.

Re: Which model is best?

Lookie nice! So you did more than just a harness conversion. You happy with it? I like NA too mainly because of weight, simplicity, economy and cost.

Re: Which model is best?

I'm sure if/when he goes turbo he'll be more than able to make up for the lil bit of extra weight it added.

Re: Which model is best?

Yes I love it NA but must have more power. Ah turbo cost effective (espeically the way Im getting mine), But really $1500 is not bad to increase your HP by 60-80 hp. And on the economy deal if you stay out of the gas pedal you will increase your gas mileage by about 5-10%
