Transmission Problem.

My transmission is having problems shifting gears.
It gets stuck in gears sometimes and then shifts into the next gear after the engine revs for a few seconds.
Also, sometimes it loses power when i get up to about 50 mph and it starts to slow down and shake a little.

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Also, a friend of mine said it could be a sensor or an electrical problem.
Any ideas on how i could check this without taking it to a mechanic or transmission shop?

check the fluid ... also smell it if it smells bad its burnt...you can try and change the filter and fluid yourself
