Question Machining Question+ a few (hundred) others

I have a 1994 DOHC 3.2L V6 Passport and I was wondering what all is involved in taking the heads off and having them machined? Can someone give me a ballpark figure for how much machine shops charge for this? Also, how much are new heads? How hard is it to get the timing correct on these vehicles? If the cam sprockets are removed, how does that affect re-installation of the timing belt? I am wondering for future reference in case I ever need this done and have learned enough to feel comfortable doing it myself.

The machine shops dont charge a lot to resurface the heads probably 200.00. As far as the timing its pretty straight foward just line up the marks on the head and you will be fine. The only real problem is that the exhaust manifold bolts love to break on them and that sucks.

I just had to deal with a noise that sounded like a failed timing belt tensioner...so I pulled the timing covers and discovered along the way that one of the bolts holding the power steering bracket broke and fell in underneath the covers. I'm assuming it was at least partially responsible for the noise, but I am replacing the timing belt and tensioner anyway. The last time I had it done was actually not too long ago, but I had it done at a shop because at that time I did not know enough about car repair to do the job. It looks like they didn't replace the tensioner, plus the idler has some nice big nicks in it that I'm afraid may damage the belt over time.

The crank pulley bolt is looking like it could be a trick to get off....how many ft. lbs. of torque would I need from an impact wrench to get the thing off? I know the torque specs say to tighten it at 123 ft. lbs, but I assume I may need a little more than that to break it loose.

well my gun has over 400 ft lbs in reverse and it usually takes them off but there is a special tool to hold the crank. Maybe even a chain wrench will work.

Do you think that 230 ft lbs of torque would do it? IF not...where can I get a holder tool? That crank pulley needs to come off, but I don't have anything that will hold it in place well enough to remove the bolt.

Well 250 might work if not the only thing that might is a chain wrench. probably available at a plumbing supply store. Chek out the link to see what im talking about.
