How difficult is it to replace AC compressor
I had posted recently about the noise my AC compressor was making, I feel now that its time hass arrived as Iam no longer getting cold air in the cabin.
Can this be replaced by mself, if not how much does this normally run for? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Burt13

RE: 98 Tahoe AC Compressor
OOPs,
My Tahoe is a 98 with 94,000 miles on it, as I asked in my previous post is it easy to do myself or will I have to take it to a garage? What is the approximate cost fo a compressor replacement. Any body had to replace one? Thanks Burt13.

I highly recommend not trying it yourself. There are many things you need to know about replacing an A/C compressor. You must recover the remaining freon in the system. a recovery machine is $4000 to $8000.
Most compressors come with oil, some do not. You must know how much oil was in the compressor you took off, and must drain the new compressor and only put recommended amount back. Not following these procedures can be detrimental in the future performance and reliabilty of the system. Other componants should also be inspected and/or replaced while the system is down. i.e. orifice tube, accumaltor ect. A proper replacement of a quality compressor and related parts should be $500 to $800. Find a reputable shop that will is knowledgable and specializes in this area. Do not price shop for the absolute lowest price, the lower price can cost you more in the long run. Recommend finding an ACDelco repair shop if you have one in your area. The quality of parts and training is hard to beat.....Joe
