A/C compressor....burning rubber and bearings.
Trying to troubleshoot an A/C failure in a 97 with 155K miles.
A/C seems to be charged but not delivering cold air. Diagnostics point to the compressor being "on" when the A/C control is off. Subsequent noises, white smoke, and burned rubber smell coming from the lower serpentine belt area. Is this a classic example of a failing Compressor or clutch? Also, I wonder if their is a concurrent electrical issue (sensor, relay) or if I am getting inaccurate readings based on the faulty compressor (electrical and mechanical)??? Any ideas on a course of action and cost of parts, labor? I think the compressor is about $190. Thanks! |

I think that your compressor has seized up.
Unless you have the ability & the tools to install a new compressor & recharge the system, your best bet is to let a pro do the job. ______________ GM!!! BRING BACK OLDS!!! |

Sounds like the compressor is siezed or seizing on you. I would take it in also if I were you. I just rebuild the AC in my suburban, its a lot of work and expensive if you don't know what you are doing. A set of gauges and a vacuum pump alone will cost you $300 dollars or more. Let alone a new compressor, dryer, Orifice tube and freon. Plus that compressor is not in a 'user friendly' place. But i'm sure the service shop will stick it to you as well... Good luck.

Re: A/C compressor....burning rubber and bearings.
Thanks for the input. You bring up some interesting points because when I priced the parts you can purchase the A/C compressor, clutch, dryer, and orifice tube separately, but it was recommended that I replace all the parts if I am going to replace the compressor. a rebuilt unit with all of the above replacement parts is about $252. This hopefully will solve the HVAC mechanical problems....if there are any additional electrical sensor or relay issues I'll have to deal with them separately. I appreciate the help with this!

My local Advance Autoparts store. They were going to order the parts for me.
