Check the connector under the steering column that connects the high/low beam switch to the wiring harness. Be careful not to deply the airbag. I had the same problem on my 1995 Tacoma, and found that there were several pins on the connector that were melted. The wiring for this connector is WAY undersized, and there is a fire hazard. The ground wire overheats and melts the pins in the connector. There have been several Tacomas/ 4 runners that have had mysterious fires under the dash. I believe this to be the cause. I have sent numerous requests to the NTSB and Toyota to have this investigated, but have been ignored. I fixed the problem myself by replacing the wiring with much larger wire, and bypassing the connector for the pins that were damaged. If you have any more questions e-mail me at
