Nos

Hey everyone my name is Tim and I am new here. I don't know very much about cars so hopefull you can help me out.

Let's say I wanted to put an engine in my car that is basiclly at the breaking point of being street legal and able to drive on at least preium gas. What engine parts would I need.

I've also wanted to put an NOS booster in a car but "you need an engine that can take the abuse of the NOS"

So my main question is what kind of engine would you need to do this type of stuff, what parts do you need to make it able to handle the abuse.

Like I said I don't know much but I'd like learn so any help would be greatly appreciated. Than You for your time.

Tim

Re: Nos

Hey Tim, well NOS is a pretty powerful thing. Not only does the engine take abuse, but the bearings, trans. and the whole bunch. If you are willing to still get NOS, then you should BEEF up your car big time if it is not already. The bigger the engine, trans. etc. the better!

Re: Nos

You essentially have to rebuild your motor. It depends on your car and stock motor, some stock motors are built damn well, others suck. But if you are talking about a typical car, you will need to replace most of the internal parts in your motor.
As well, how big of a shot of nitrous(if you have already decided) are you trying to put in your car? Because that would make a big difference.
3rdly, nitrous is 100% street illegal, just FYI.
Lastly, may I suggest you do a bit more research on the car/modifications you intend to do. As you previously said, you don't know very much about cars. I suggest you research and decide if nitrous is really the route you wish to pursue. There are plenty of other ways to get hp and go fast. You might be interested in forced induction. ie. a turbo or supercharger. A supercharger for instance has the power 100% of the time, you don't need to refill any bottles, and it is legal. When you hit the gas, the power is there, you don't need to crack open any bottles or refill it every time you race. It just seems to me that you might benefit more from taking a step back and really learning/deciding what exactly you are going for, that way you will be more happy with the end result and have a more enjoyable time along the way.

First off, it's not "you NEED an engine that can take the abuse", it's "YOU need to tune it properly so it can take the boost".

Second of all, its called nitrous, nitrous oxide, N2O, juice, laughing gas, and so on. NOS is just a brand name that sells nitrous products.

If you want just around 50-75 HP boost, just get a dry kit, you won't need to use premium gasoline, you can, but nothing different or magical will happen.

For more higher boosts up to probably 125 HP, you mght be better off looking for a wet kit. But for up to 300+ HP boost, just get a direct port injection one, it requires a bit of drilling. but if you want INSANE amounts of boost, just get a stronger engine block to start off with.

If you really want to learn more about cars just go to the engineering/ technical forum, it's under "cars in general"

Ok, what does the engine drivetrain have anything to do with the ability to use Nitrous? Turbos can be just as powerful, looks like civics are breaking the rules or something, because they are FWD. Oh, and so are integras, maybe GTI VR6s, and maybe the RSX.

Most american drag cars take nitrous... After all, wasn't it the Americans that introduced Nitrous to the Automotive industry?

And please don't make references to movies, most don't hold much fact, and are only meant to entertain their audiences.

Re: Nos

I've seen an older Camaro running nitrous at the track. It was a 70's something model.

Re: Nos

Stock set up nitrous is not a good idea but a small shot can be used! Hell I ran a Pontiac Grand am on a 120 shot for a full season, got to happy with the juice and blew 2 pistons apart! hence why not to run nitrous on a stock motor! but if your new to moding cars dont go with nitrous yet lean as much as ya can about building engines and setting up nitrous kits first! I didnt I have learned by trial and error but I learned an am still learning.
