Should I change Trans Fluid.. Still red, but Smells Burnt..??

I was wondering if i should get it flushed and filled at avis. 95 t bird 4.6 122 thousand miles and absolutely NO sign's of tranny trouble(slippage/skipping). Now, when i check the fluid at cold, it is nice and red, no traces of metal/shavings/browning, but smells a little burnt. Now after driving and heating up, the fluid is still red and extremely clear, but smell's more burnt then when the car was cold. A good friend of mine says once a car passes 100 thousand miles, leave the fluid alone, cause changeing it kind of awakens all the crap at the bottom and gums up the tranny. Now, if i get it completely flushed, wont this clean out everything??

Every car i've known, that i had that was over 100k miles and had the fluid flushed and replaced, eventually started to skip, or slip bigtime. My brother had a lincoln-92, and literally a week after he had the fluid changed, the tranny blew on the LIE, fluid everywhere.

Thanks..

Well, it's kind of hit and miss. If the tranny has been serviced regularly over its life (every 30,000 miles minimum) you shouldn't have a problem. If it has not been serviced you may cause problems, but it is not an absolute fact that it will. What happens with an old tranny that has never been serviced is all the friction material and what not is helping things work correctly, i.e. the friction discs being able to hold against the steels. ATF has such awesome cleaning qualities that it will wash all of this away and can cause slippage. Flip a quarter if you need to. Personally, I would drive it the way it is and put some $$ aside for a new tranny in 80,000 miles.

Thanks, btw, do these ford tranny's tend to get symptoms AS they wear, like slipping, shuddering etc. Or do they just explode one day/even though they seem to be perfect. Right now though, godwilling, everything seems fine.

when the tranny starts to go out on the birds, trust me from experience, you will know it's the tranny.
