Sub Help for a Newbie

I am about to buy one sub, either a 10" or a 12". For the most part im listening to rap, r&b, (some oldies and slow songs, and some rock but very little). Im thinknig a 12" is best for my music genre? And i want to know which subs to stay away from, i know audiobahn fell off so i wont get near them. The Polk Momo 12" Encolsed sub thats 500rms, i heard its pretty good what do you guys think? Alpine type R subs sound nice to me too except i just need one sub and 300 rms i dont tihnk will do it for me. I cant put two subs because its my parents car and il be driving that i dont want to take up their trunk space. So i was just wondering what 12" sub to look into, i want around 500 or 600 watts rms, i think its enough for a daily driver correct?

Re: Sub Help for a Newbie

well i mean i dont want to spend an arm and a leg for one sub, around $150 enclosed, $200 tops for a really good one.. is 600 watts rms enough for a daily driver, i mean id probably go deaf with anymore im not cranking it all the way up or letting the whole block feel me a block away.

Re: Sub Help for a Newbie

i dont think you will be able to find a really nice sub thats that powerful for $200 with a box. if $200 is your limit, then look at those companies and see what it gets you. then, decide if you want to spend more, or go with a cheaper brand. you also need to make sure that you pick a nice amp if you are going to spend money on a nice sub.

Re: Sub Help for a Newbie

yea thats why i cant spend that much on a sub, amps are expensive so i have to save up for that too. There are some ads here in L.A. that are like 900 watts (doubt rms) Rockford Fosgate 2 12" enclosed system, with amp for like $150. Seems really cheap and doubt its an authorized dealer.. doubt any are its L.A. lol

I was in your place a couple of weeks ago. I have a 94 Integra and I know That I didn't need a big ass system. So I bought a Alpine 700W mono amp for like $140 and a 12" Infinity sub for $60, all shipped and all on EBAY And $20 for the MDF wood to build my ported box and boy, this thing knocks. You see with the right air space, most any subs would sound good. A key thing is the box. A lot of people buy those best buy boxes and make a good sub sound like shit.

Re: Sub Help for a Newbie

well i have no idea how to build boxes and i do not want the headache of building one. I'd rather have it already built or have somebody build it for me. But yea i heard Infinity Perfect subs bumpp but its only like 350watts rms? How can it bump more than the Polk Momo that puts out 500 rms? Is it possible that better quality subs with lower rms bump more then lower medium quality subs with higher rms.

Re: Sub Help for a Newbie

Go JL, the majority of the people here have suggested it and they are not wrong, I am running a single 12w6 in my CRX powered by a soundstream 5 channel amp and it sounds far better than most of the crap driving around. Keep in mind 200 high quality watts is far better than 1000 cheap ass watts.

audiobahn fell off? what is that supposed to mean? I have heard alot of subs and I still say that audiobahn subs are some of the cleanest hardest hitting out there. I have 2 1205Q subs in my teg with a 1500something hifonics brutus amp... f***ing is sick. whatever you do don't buy anything but subs from audiobahn though the rest off their stuff is overpriced for what you get.

Re: Sub Help for a Newbie

i dont know why everyone praises JL like its the end-all be-all of audio.... there is better stuff out there if you look. if you want something clean, and relatively inexpensive, go with a memphis power reference 12, or diamond audio cm3 12 and a memphis 200.2 amp, it'll be very clean, and quite loud for the money.

Re: Sub Help for a Newbie

Memphis 12" HPO is sweet as hell. I know first hand, how they sound. But for price, the 12" JL W3 is also a good sub to go with. You get good sound for a low price, and just about any amp can push it. It's lower in wattage, but it makes that up in quality. Audiobahn subs aren't what they used to be, but they are still good subs, and their amps are awesome. I have the A2200HC amp with two Memphis 10" HPO subs. It's perfect for me. Memphis, IDMax, Infinity Perfect, Alpine Type R, Rockford, Polk, MB Quart...lots of good brands to choose from. Just shop around and ask around, look for the best quality with the best price.
