Purchasing Stealth

Well today i am going to look at a 92 Stealth R/T Twin Turbo. I am kinda new to the 3S's but have a friend who swears by them, but unfortunatly he has been out of town and i need advice. This is a 92 Stealth with perfect everything, new alternator, water pump, clutch, tires, and brakes, but the only thing that turns me off about this car is that it has 155,000 miles on the odometer, but i have done a history check and it has never been in a wreck, never had any problems like that and has been taken very good care of. He told me that the car has mainly only been driven on the highways, but i was just wondering about the durability of the engine. He claims that it is a strong tought engine, but i figured i would come to a good source and find out. The car is going for $5000 to, so i want to know if it is a good deal. Thanks in advance.

Re: Questions about Stealth

clam- Because that is all stuff that needs to be replaced after awhile.
John- to ease your doubts, the engine is built tough and there are some recorded at over 200,000 and even a few over 300,000 miles on the original engine. This car is not amazing on reliability, but it isn't bad either. If it was properly maintained, I wouldn't worry about the mileage. A few things I would check out though. Did it get the 60k tuneup and the 120k tuneup(these are big productions, like $1,000) and hopefully well recorded. If everything else looks good, no smoke, and such then you are in good shape. Also check if the transfer case was ever taken in for a recall. Sometimes they grow leaks, but it should have been taken care of already.
My advice though, take your friend with you, and/or take the car to a competant mechanic and have him look it over, to make sure everything is good.

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

Re: Questions about Stealth

It was properly maintained the car has been in the shop so much that being a 1994 it has approx 100,000 and that was highway miles in the last two years .before that it was 34,000 the car does smoke after getting it back from the transmission shop for the second time the odemeter had to be replaced three times. It (The Odometer) know works but it has only been out of the transmission shop for a month. . Two years ago I had the radator flushed tansmission fluied changed. The day I got it out of the transmission shop I had the oil changed and two tires put on it. Know it sits in the driveway.

Re: Questions about Stealth

Before you buy it, SMELL THE OIL. Yes smell the oil, (if you are unsure of what motor oil smells like go buy a qt.) i have an eclipse that i am in the middle of replacing the motor, i noticed that the engine oil smelled like additives but didn't look to closley into it, you'll know what i mean if it doesnt smell normal. What used car dealers do is that they put this....crap in the motor so it does not smoke. But when you change the oil or have a rod start knocking (in my case) the car will either start to smoke or break down in the middle of the street!!!

Re: Questions about Stealth

Well, you are on to something because my car finally fired up and drove but you will never know when it goes down. That means anywhere even on the highway. Today when my husband reved it up I smelled something different and I think that is what you are talking about.

I was on the radio station today and they advised me to have a od test (can be missed spelled) but how good is that? Anyway, that was his suggestion, I feel that after getting it out of the transmission shop (1 month) and having put new oil the oxigen oil sensor could have a bearing to this very problem. I also want to stress that all people no matter the problem give input. Thank you, sir for doing just that and please continue.
