Hi guys... I had a ride in my frd's EG6 yesterday. i saw my frd driving up to 7500 rpm in 2nd gear and kept on doing that with 3rd gear, but i didn't actually feel anything difference...
the only thing that i noticed was the sound of the engine changed at abt 5800 rpm, but i really didn't feel any specail or being pulled.. I personaly have a 97 b16a delsol, but I don't have chance to test the VTEC as the gearbox problem still waiting to be fixed... so, can anyone tell me how does it actually feel like when the VTEC kicks in?? |

Re: what feeling does VTEC actually give U???
On the orginal EF civics and CRXs which weight a lot less there is a deffinite but light kick in the pants at 5,000rpm when it switchs cams. But that was on the first B16a engine.
The later versions of the engines had a higher change over point which was also a lot smoother. Add into that the extra weight which dampens accleration and the later VTEC equiped cars dont give any real feeling of increased accleration. There is just one long pull accross a very wide RPM range, which is exactly what VTEC is ment to provide.

So, what you are saying is that, VTEC doesn't really give more power?
but i always hear some people said that their VTEC have some problem, or even said the VTEC doesn't Kick in... if like what you said before, how do i know if the VTEC is working fine??? |

Re: what feeling does VTEC actually give U???
It won't rev out to redline if the VTEC isnt working.
It dosn't "kick in" VTEC isn't something added to an engine, its part of the engine, and technicaly is active all the time. All it does is allow the engine to run two sets of Cams and ECU air/fuel maps to give it a larger power band than an engine with only one cam(s) and a single air/fuel map. Read this, all of it: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ad.php?t=77265

Re: what feeling does VTEC actually give U???
You can feel a kick when Vtec kicks in. The tachometer noticibly goes faster as well as the speed needle. Its not like a rocket, but yeah of course you can feel that you being pulled. That is on DOHC VTEC engines which are meant for performance.
Get into a civic SI, ITR, CTR, S2000. Youll feel it.

Re: what feeling does VTEC actually give U???
The Civic Si is technically the same car as our VTEC models. Same suspension, same motor, and pretty much the same weight. Might feel different due to chassis design and aesthetics, but otherwise they're the same on the performance ladder. Also, the EG6 is about 70 lbs lighter than the Del Sol EG2's, so you'll notice the transition even less in the Del Sol.
With the VTEC changeover, you won't really feel anything drastic. It's smooth, so you don't really notice anything different happening other than the pitch of the motor, but trust me it's there. It'll pull better with the changeover. You'll notice it mostly on the speedometer and the cars you pass than anywhere else.

Re: what feeling does VTEC actually give U???
i kinda wanna know whythis is being asked in here rather than in technical .....but yeah the only way your REALLY gonna fell a VTEC engaugement is to have a DOHC application and know exactly when your engaugement takes place and know when to shift to keep her there ..other than that you will feel it only a moderate ammount but again really only in a DOHC and in some SOHC if your a hell of a driver

Re: what feeling does VTEC actually give U???
Actually, you probably won't even hear the VTEC changeover until you do some modifications to the motor. If I remember, I didn't even hear it until I installed an aftermarket intake. The OEM intake really muffled the changeover.
As for feeling anything, bear in mind my Del Sol's almost entirely stock so that's what I'm basing my experience from. I'm sure with additional engine modifications you'll actually feel the power increase.

Speaking from experience in dealing with both ligher vehicles and DOHC and SOHC VTEC and non-VTEC equipted engines...
You don't really notice VTEC until it's not there. Running my 91 hatch with the stock SOHC non-vtec engine.. the power would almost totally fall off after 5,500rpm... had nearly the same trouble with DOHC B18A1 non-vtec engine... power was great down low, but would fall off at higher rpms. Now I never had a DOHC VTEC engine in my 91 hatch, but when I put the SOHC VTEC engine in, the power band didn't fall off at 5,500rpm anymore, but continued to pull all the way through to 8,000rpm. As with my Del Sol VTEC now having the B16A... not only does the power band continue to higher rpm's... but if you look at the engine specs, and drive with the engine for a while, you see that the peak horse power and torque is made above 5,500rpm... after the VTEC change over point... same is true for all the other DOHC VTEC engines. But still... you don't really notice it as much when you have it, as when you don't have it... you only miss it once it's gone.
