i just picked up a rear-axle assembly from a local yard. thing about it is that the junction where the axle tubes go into the differential housing there is a dry leak, that is to say its all greasy and wet but isnt dripping. the u-joint where the driveshaft connects is covered in grease also and there is a very slim gap between the joint and the diff housing. what i want to know is do i have a bum axle housing or is this normal for some god-forsaken reason?

The grease around the u-joint could very well be caused by a leaky pinion seal. The leak around the cover(I think thats where u mean it is) could be caused by a plugged axle breather. Then the pressure would build up inside the axle and could force the fluid out.
