Unhappy acceleration problem that no one can figure out

I bought my OLD accord (86 LX) back in January. Ever since, it has had an intermitten problem that no one has been able to figure out:

When putting anything but light pressure on the pedal it surges and loses power. It rarely stalls, but the rpms fall and the gas pedal becomes completely ineffective. It is especially common when trying to accelerate quickly or go up a hill. Some times it violently jerks as well. This is a problem since i live in the mountains of western north carolina. If you turn the car off and let it sit for a little bit it will work for a bit more which led me to believe it was some sort of computer problem but it is becoming worse and worse. The most frustrating part is that it is so intermitten that when i take it to a mechanic, they drive it and say nothing is wrong. I've had countless mechanics look at it and have replaced:

gas cap
distributor cap and rotor
fuel pump
both fuel filters
carbeurator
spark plugs
plug wires
o2 sensor
also added gas cleaner along with carb cleaner to gas tank

it has become quite costly to do all this and i'm finally becoming desperate. Im not sure if at this point it would make it to a dealer as the closest one is roughly 2 hrs away. any help would be GREATLY appreciated :-\

heres a idea. i just did the h23a1 intake swap and i had the same problem all the time (at idle and driving). Did you, or anyone mess with the vaccum lines? If so grab your haynes and check the codes on the vaccum lines and make sure there going where there supposed to. But all in all it sounds like a air leak, vaccum line loose or cracked or even the intake mani gasket. What i did was go to the dealer and got a pic of the mani w/ all the gaskets and bought them all! ...ps don't just go in and say you need them all - i did, they wanted over $150 after i picked out everthing i needed it was a whole $40!
