95 4runner way to get check engine code?

Is there a way to use a jumper across the terminals at the diagnostic plug in to get the check engine light to flash a code?No one in town here can plug in to check and the nearest Toyota dealer is an hour away.Truck runs fine but the light will come on intermittently, curious to know what's up.Thanks.

Thanks Brian, exactly the info I needed.Going to start eliminating possibilities in morning.Came up with multiple codes 25 & 26.If you have a chance to run over the list and recommend which to try first and cheapest that would be great!

I would look at the O2 sensor first and then cleaning the injectors next.
