2.8 s-10 stalling out

i just bought a 1987 chevy s-10 v-6 2.8. it is already giving me trouble. as i depress the gas, it makes a noise like it is stalling. sometimes it will even do it for long enough that it will actually stall out completely. this is an automatic transmission. i drove for around 5-10 miles at 60 mph before it began cutting in and out. it felt like it was popping in between neutral and drive. as i pulled into my driveway, steam rose out of my engine as if it was overheated, but the radiator is brand new and in good condition. i will be the first to admit that i dont know very much about chevy trucks, and this was to be my learning experience, but i have never even experienced this before. what is going on with my pickup and how can i correct it?
