Cool 83 Corolla automatic 100K miles transmission problem

Hi--

I'm a low budget dude with a low budget car, an 83 Corolla with only 104,000 miles; have driven no prob for a while, but now, finally, it's reluctant to shift from gear to gear (automatic). Has power though...took to a transmisison shop, they wanted $900 to fix (twice what I paid for the car!) Has fluid, no major leaks.

Any ideas how I can check for any overlooked/simpler fixes first...I heard something about linkages possibly being out of adjustment, master cyclidars, etc.

Medium proficiency with fixing cars, have fixed a head gasket before successfully.

Basically I'm hoping someone here car steer me in the right direction for an affordable fix, a clutch kit, if I need it, or a linkage tweak/check.

Any advice appreciated,

JR

I would check your torque converter. It acts as the clutch in your automatic tranny.

When I had a tranny problem in my 82 Corolla, I found a better way to fix it -> I converted it to manual.

Good luck...

Thanks Toyrolla! Will check it out...probably won't convert to manual, not on this one at least!

Due to the age of the car, you might be better off getting a used tranny as opposed to a torque converter. However, try submitting an inquiry to this site. Can't hurt:

Newman Auto Parts

You can inquire on either a torque converter, tranny, or both....

Good luck Dude.

Cool Thanks again...

Will try to squeeze a few more miles out of this one...figured it's only 100K, so there might be some life left in it...

Thanks again,

J
