Radars

Ok big question, I was thinking of buying a radar not sure wat kind because im not sure what all do. I was wondering what would be the best one to buy and whats it do. Because I know ome tell you when a tracking gun is tracking you, wich would help much, and some jam the signal sometimes so that cops cant read your speed but im not sure if that works. SO if anyone knows any other ones plz lemme know and where I would get it. I was also wondering if there was such radar that exsisted that would warn you if there is a radar signal or sumthing to tell you that a cop is nearby like in a certain ile radius.

Re: Radars

hmmm well let me shoot off real quick my understanding...

radar/laser detector - detects when stray rays hit the detector, possily from when the cops tried to clock someone else. But if they arent clockin and u fly by all they gotta do it hit ya and ur toast before u even knew it. but if they do clock someone else the stray rays can be picked up from a fair distance away. however laser since it is a more narrow beam is harder to detect from a distance

radar/laser jammers/scramblers - Scrambles the radar so when the beam gets back to the cop it reads nothing on the gun(illegal in some states)

as for which one to get my bud bought a cobra 9k series and he has yet to get a ticket its saved him a couple times

Re: Radars

Valentine 1 is probably the best radar detector out there. Just don't rely on it too much. I've been driving without a radar detector for almost 4 years now and have only got pulled over once and that was because I was following too close.

My friend, who has had a radar detector for the last 4 years, has been pulled over at least 15 times, we stopped keeping count after that.

Re: Radars

Actually, radar jammers are illegal in all states. Radar detectors are legal in all states, except Virginia (i think)...

I've heard that the Valentine 1 is the best detector, like what GScivic7 said, but I don't think I would get one and put all my faith on a little device like that.

radar detectors are not illegal in the states, because it says so in the packaging and such,
but anyway ive had a radar detector and still got two tickets,
one for negligent driving and one for running a red which i thought at the time was blinking red, each time my radar didnt go off

radar detectors have some flaws. False alarms which can be annoying, and sometimes can't detect the radar because some police are using high tech undetectable radar guns(only a few).

Re: Radars

yah, they tend to pick up signals from like store alarms and things of that nature. Really annoying.

Re: Radars

Radar guns give off like a few different types of signals, a good radar detector will pick up the signal from a ways away and alert you.

Re: Radars

no, if the cop is shooting radar it will pick it up, but only up to a certain distance away. He doesn't have to be pointing it right at you.

Everything you wanted to know about radar and radar detectors but were afraid to ask ......

radar waves used in traffic enforcement are electromagnetic waves, just like light waves, microwaves, radio waves, etc .... They operate in 3 frequency ranges; X band = 10.45 - 10.60 GHz, K band = 24.050 - 24.250 Ghz, and super wideband Ka = 33.4 - 36.0 Ghz. GHz = Gigaherz, the same as GB = gigabytes in a computers memory. The way it works - the policeman aims his radar gun at you and pulls the trigger. The gun fires off a very low power microwave in the GHz range at your car, when the wave hits your car it is reflected back to the receiver on the cops radar gun. Due to a phenomenon in nature known as the doppler effect, the frequency of the incoming wave will be shifted up or down - depending on whether you are coming or going in relation to the cop. This change in frequency can be easily be converted into a velocity (speed). Radar jammers work by reading the signal (frequency) of the cops radar gun and sending that same frequency out at a higher power. His radar reads same freq in as out - net speed = 0.
