air fuel gauge install and got a ????

i just recently hooked up my air fuel gauge i hooked it up correctly, but i did use the stock o2 sensor, however, while my car is at idle it reads the richest possible and does not move, even when i hit the gas. but when i'm driving in gear lets say 3rd and i let my foot completely off of the gas it moves back to stoich, then when i hit the gas even the slightest bit, it moves back to rich. is the gauge accurate enough to tell me that my car is running that rich? isnt the gauge supposed to bounce around while its at idle? mine just sits on rich at the farthest part of rich, any help would be appreciated thanks

Your O2 sensor might be faulty or fouled.

Actually, they are pretty accurate, problem is, they don't read the A/F ratio. They are voltometers for the o2 reading the output signal voltage. Since your narrowband o2 sends a signal to the ECU via this current, what it's seeing is a change in voltage. At WOT your ECU is using rich fuel maps hence the rich measurement, and when you let off the gas, the voltage drops, should lean all the way off the readout, and hte bouncing when driving normal is the o2 changing the volts to the ECU to accomodate ever changing conditions You need to wideband o2 to get real A/F readings.
