Engine Swap

How Much Would It Cost On Average To Put A 350 Into My 89rs. I Bought A 89 Iroc For 900 Dollars From My Friend, So I'm Planning To Put Everything On, Rear End, Engine, Tranny, Shocks, motor, Etc.

Re: Engine Swap

Well are you just going to swap everything into your car?? If you can do all the work yourself it shouldnt cost much at all.

Re: Engine Swap

A good 350 will run about 1700 dollars.
Go through autozone for it , I did.
Installation ( if you do it through a shop ) could run all the way up to 600 dollars. Free if you do it yourself. Don't need much , socket set , set of metric and standard wrenches , a engine lift and your about good to go. Just don't set the engine on any wiring. You'll regret it.

Re: Engine Swap

Oh , put the tranny and engine in at the same time ( leave tranny bolted to engine.) just use a rolling 2 ton floor jack ot support the rear of the tranny ( where drive shaft connects ) But not on the cog.and just lower them in at same time , much easier than trying to mount the tranny to the engine one after another...pain in the ass...

depends what year of motor your going with and what kind. you'll need an engine with the dipstick on the passenger side in order for your original manifolds to work. if your looking at a brand new engine they usually have a hole on both sides of the block for the dipstick. if your looking for a used engine i'd recommend a 1987 or newer with the roller cam, it's much nicer than flat tappet. if you get an engine of 1987 or older, you'll need headers. if your looking to keep the fuel injection you'll need 87 and newer 305 or L98 heads for the intake to bolt on. if you are looking for a used engine, i'd check the junk yards for camaro's, trucks, suburbans, or anything 1987 or newer with a 350.

Re: Engine Swap

Man 25th, where do you live? Down here the cheapest place to get an engine swapped, excluding me, is about a grand. If your gonna go through autozone or someplace like that I'd get a vortec long block. But personaly I'd check your local papers or trading post for people selling there engines. You can get some really great deals. But what I got from your post you got an iroc and transplanting everything into your RS really simple shouldn't take more than a day or two if you start early. Since the cars are exactly the same vise the powerplant all you have to do is take on off and bolt the other one in it's place.

Re: Engine Swap

well u have to ask yourself why he would sell an 89 iroc for 900 dollars. Just maybe that engine in its screwed so make sure it runs if not then u gotta get it rebuilt or a new one GM has one for 1200 at the dealership a stock long block. And if your RS was a v6 then u gotta reposition the motor mounts and u need the computer and harness. good luck
