Question check engine light

i'm having alot of problems with my '96 328is. my check engine light won't turn off. i've taken my car to the dealership and they thought it was the gas cap but it wasn't. we tried everything. i'm tempted to buy the oil/ service light reset tool and code reader. which ones are cheap and good ...at the same time can reset the oil/service light?

Re: check engine light

the dealer or a shop with a MoDiC or GT-1 can access all the DME faults and tell you where the problem(s) are. the correct diagnosis of those faults are the key. the codes don't really tell you what to replace.....you need more info & a service reset tool won't turn off a "check engine" lamp.

Re: check engine light

most aftermarket scanners give only the most basic code info, you'll probably come out ahead pending a few $'s to have someone equipped give you a full printout of the faults and go from there.
