1990 4 cyl SE, bad mileage

Hey, I am having a couple problems with my Sunbird. It only has 70 k on it and I want it to last a long time. my problems are.

1. I am only getting 17-19 mpg, on a 4 cyl, Is there anything that I can do to boost this. has anyone tried anything that works. Or am I stuck with this low fuel economy.

2. My radio started creating a loud static popping sound. I tried replacing the head unit but that didn't work. Is it the wiring, or should I try playing with the speakers?

sounds like spark plugs and wires. the static from them can interfere with the radio and they will kill fuel economy. replace the plugs and cap and rotor too if equiped
