Need help with 500 SEL Purchase

Hi,

My friend is considering buying a 1992 500 SEL with 125k miles on it. It is from a dealer, so there is not service history, but the car seems to be immaculate other than normal wear. Even the paint is almost perfect, all of the electronics seem to work great etc...but someone told us that there was some big thing with this type of MB that had to do with engine servicing. Does anyone know anything about this? Also, are there any other things that Tom (my friend) need be aware of. He is planning on getting the car checked out tomorrow by a MB mechanic. Also, the asking price is $9995, does this seem reasonable?

Seriously, the car seems to be immaculate. Please help ASAP!!!! You may email me directly at [email protected].

Thanks in advance.

yep, those cars are usually in a very good condition and their reliability is unbeatable.
and normally those cars aren't abused by former owners -

I'd say if this car isn't a fifth-hand, you can buy it.

maybe you should look at the suspension and maybe if the chassis is a bit twisted.

the price for a 90-94 500 sel with a similar mileage here in germany ranges from 7000€ with blemishes to 12000€ in very good condition.

never heard of engine problems, tho
125k miles are a lot, but if there was always enough oil supply, it'll run 500k miles.

Listen to the engine carefully. If it seems like you hear ticking noises they can really be costful. You're looking at probably replacing cross-over tubes, camshafts, lifters, etc.

Also have the tech put it up in the air and check the suspension well. Caster bushings, shocks, ball joints, etc. Make sure the front and rear main seals aren't leaking, along with the head gasket, those are some other costly repairs.

If those all pass then I'd say get the car. The 140 chassis is really solid and they last a long time if well maintained.

Re: Need help with 500 SEL Purchase

Those Mercedes Benz are great for their age. You friend will probably have to spend a lot of money maintaining that car but those cars will last forever. My dad had a 560 SEC for 14 years and it never broke down or had any problems at all. He only had to bring it in for service. The car has a strong steel body. Plus you will feel very safe in that car. Your friend we enjoy the car if he buys it.
