Question Service engine light

For about the past two weeks my car has been making a studdering sound and jerking a little. I have not had any major problems with my 2000 zx2 and then yesterday my service engine light came on. Has anyone else had this problem and what is the best course of action.

Re: Service engine light

offhand it sounds like a misfire

is it constant, occassional, does it happen at idle, the more you tell us the better we can help.

how many miles on it are you due for some plugs and maybe wires.

when my car is cold it is constant but after it has it becomes a little less consistant. Yes it does at idle and in december 2003 i hade my spark plugs changed and the place i took it to messed up my wires and i had to have them replaced.

Re: Service engine light

well i'd change the plugs anyway, they might have messed them up too, and are you sure you for zx2 wire not focus wires? a lot of places mess that up

Take the Car to "Auto Zone", they will check what the service light error is for free. Took my son's '99 escort zx2 car because the service light came on and also my F150. Told me it was the oxygen sensor or more likely the mod my son did on the air filter, it was running too rich. Took out the mod and changed the spark plugs and it works great. On the F150 they told me it was spark plug or coil #6. Changed it for under $50, beat taking it to an auto repair (they charged over $500 to replace 2 coils). They may not give you the exact answer to the problem, but will let you klnow what may be causing the service light and get you in the right direction. Can't beat it, it's Free.
Hope this helps some.

Just corrected the problem on mine traced it back to the pcv elbow at the air box, the rubber elbow had deteriorated and was causing a vacuum leak. 65000 miles it should have not been that bad looked like it had 200000 miles on it

Re: Service engine light

Just found the same problem on my 2000 ZX2 @7100 miles. The thing sucked into a pinch mode except at idle where it got rough. The check engine light came on about a day before the rough idle showed up. Another clue is an oil emulsion coming from the breather separator into the line going into the inlet side of the air filter box. -Made a mess of the filter. I am trying to decide what to do for performance and gas milage. Right now the PVC valve just has a short section of hose pointing it down away from the exhaust manifold. I might do a similar thing with the breather after inspection -or I might rplace the cheaply made vac hose (most vac hoses have a thicker wall than this thing). How much did your hose cost? Any suggestions? I am sure we are not the only ones who ran into this problem!
