Engine types

Hi guys,

Sorry, I know there's lots in the forum about this already, and it goes against posting rules, but I just wanted to ask a question about my engine type.

It seems that I have a B16A2 (engine number: B16A2-1100062), and from other posts I have read that it puts out 170 BHP - is this right or is it more like 160 BHP as I've always thought?

Can someone please also explain the naming convention that Honda uses for their engines?

So far I've seen that the first letter is the engine size or main revision, then the number are the size (i.e. mines 16 hundered cc), then the last bit is the minor revisision I take it?

Is there a better version of my B16A2 DOHC VTEC in Del Sols nower days?

Sorry - that was completely garbbled, I hope you made sense of it.

Thanks,

Jonny

Re: Engine types

In simple ters it runs like this ..the letter is the series of the engine..meaning there all basically the same cast..then your numerics that specify that particular engine by its size..and finally the alpha/numeric series that can follow represent the generation of the engine...
IE: B16A2
B = b sereies engine
16= 1.6 liter ( 1600 cc )
A2 = 2nd generation of that motor ..not the car persay

and you have a rating of 170 because it is the 2nd generation..the B16A1 1st generation has a rating of 160 ..but in all realness ..your in the 160's and the B16A1's are in the 150's ....cars are always overated when it comes time to address thier HP and Tourqe issues..helps sell the car basically....
hope this clears it up a lil bit

Re: Engine types

Hey guy,

Don't worry about it. It's a legit question.

Engine code is like this:

B = engine series
16 = displacement
Ax = motor generation (second generation in your case)

In Japan, they're all labelled B16A. Here in the US the motors are labelled A2 or A3 based on the motor generation. Most A2 motors are OBDII (except for the few produced from '94 - '95 and the A3's are OBDI.

The motors are 170bhp everywhere but the US. We rate the motors in HP, not BHP. In addition, due to the emissions and motor regulations elsewhere in the world the motors in Japan do indeed squeeze out a few more HP due to slightly different engine compression and octane ratings for their fuel among other things. So here in the US, it's 160hp.

Your motor is pretty much as current as it gets for your Del Sol. You have a '94, so your B16A2 is functionally identical to my B16A3. Only the B16A2's '96 - '97 were slightly different. Now, you could get a B16B Civic Type-R motor. That's a better version of the B16 motor, but pricey and not always easy to find.
