error code 440

My check engine light came on the other day. I had it checked and it the report came back with two different error codes. One was something to do with the camshaft, and the other was error code 440 which has something to do with the evap system. I had recentley put on a generic locking gas cap. I put my old one back on, the guy reset my light and told me that it would check again in 45 miles. As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot my light was back on. He checked it again and it was the same error code, 440. He told me that I needed to take it to the dealer because he did not have the equip to fix it. What I am wondering is if anybody knows how much that will cost, and what exactley is wrong with my car? Is it bad if I do not get it fixed right away? I am a dumb girl who knows nothing about cars, and need some help. Thanks!

this is an emissions code and will not effect the was the car runs, 99 percent of the time it is a loose or damaged gas cap.

hi all i too had that happen to me and it turned out my gas cover was not put on propley and what they told me to do in the manual was the tank requares at least one fill up and a trip back to the garage to wipe that error message off again hope it help its worth a shot . or it may also be a number of things read the oweners manual for more on thsi it helps ....

always tighten your fuel cap at least three clicks, or your code will never go away. buy an original equipment cap and it should cure your code 404.
