91 Cav automatic stalling at stops
This seems like a common problem with older cavs:
After driving my 91 cav with an automatic transmission for 15 - 20 minutes (when the car has warmed up), it stalls at every stop on the downshift. I can usually nurse it home at this point as long as I manually downshift at stops. It doesn't seem to have any problem upshifting during acceleration at this time. I've tuned it up (cap, wires, rotor, plugs, filters), changed the engine and transmission oil, and had the starter replaced over the past winter. The car is running great except for this stalling problem. Most people seem to think the problem is the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid; however my local service shop suggests I get a new transmission. My questions are as follows: What does this part do, how difficult is it to swap this part out, and how long can you drive with it simply disconnected? thanks, MAH |

Re: 91 Cav automatic stalling at stops
Sounds like what mine did, and it is probably the torque convertor clutch solenoid. it isn't hard to do, just time consuming, and I did mine myself. Took me a couple of hours, but was also taking my time, and trying not to remove all the closouts and such....

Re: 91 Cav automatic stalling at stops
So far so good. I unplugged the TCC and drove around a bit last night with no stalling. the car seems to run rougher though. If I can avoid it, I'd rather not replace the TCC as I'll be selling the car in a couple of months. Does anyone know how if having the TCC disconnected will hurt the transmission??? I'm planning on driving a bit in the near future and don't want to wreck the tranny.

Re: 91 Cav automatic stalling at stops
Having the TCC disconnected will not hurt the transmission. The TCC's job is to lock the transmission in the highest gear for fuel economy. It shouldn't effect the cars driving, or anything else. The only minor effect, is losing maybe a mile per gallon of fuel economy.. and mostly only on highway driving.

Re: 91 Cav automatic stalling at stops
the tcc doesent lock the tranny into hi gear, but locke the converter and makes a physical connection from the engine to the tranny. this makes for less power being lost due to slippage from a fluid connection only.

Yes you can leave it disconnected. I have a 94 that has been disconnected for a number of years now. I can barely notice the change in gas mileage. good luck.
