how much is a yard?
What are the demensions when people talk about a "yard" of fabric? is it a yard a square 1yardx1yard? i need to know cuz i am custom redoing the interior of my car, and i want to measure to see how much i need...

im pretty sure its either 1 yard x 1 yard. if nothing else, i think that the fabric comes at least 30" wide.....

Both are correct EXCEPT not all fabric is 36" wide. Some fabric comes in 54" wide...some less. Best thing to do is pic a material and find out the width that it is available in. Then determine how much you need. Another thing is to buy extra. Materials such as vinyl are made in lots. So sometimes the color is not exactly the same even if it is called the same or has the same part number. I always buy a few yards extra to ensure a proper match down the road.

Almost forgot...36" x 36" is a square yard. When you go to a fabric store they are going to ask how mnay yards not square yards because of the different widths fabric is available.

Nooooooo!
Don't buy the $10 fabric from the fabric store! It wont last in your car! When picking out automotive upholstery fabric or vinyl always pick something that is UV treated, otherwise it will fade and disintegrate in no time! expect to pay at least $15-$25 per yard for automotive/marine vinyl. The "good stuff" usually goes for about $30+. Most all upholstery grade fabrics are 54"-60" wide. This means when you buy one yard you are buying a piece that measures 36" X 54". Apparel fabrics are usually 45", sometimes 54" or 60" wide and WILL NOT survive in a car! Last edited by lxndr; 06-21-2004 at 03:41 PM.

Lxndr...is correct. Another problem with alot of vinyls in fabric stores is the backing. They often have the fuzzy cotton backing. That is no good if you plan on glueing the vinyl. It bunches and causes lumps. Another thing to look for in vinyl is stretchability. There are two way stretch and three way stretch vinyls. What you need depends on how curvy the item you are covering is. Check out www.selectproducts.com
