automotive schooling (Wyotech)
Hello everyone. I'm schuled to go to Wyotech in the fall. I'm looking foward to the whole experience. So far I've talked to a few people that have gone there and they haven't had anything to bad to say about it, or really good for that matter. I was hoping some of you here could tell me more about the school or experiences you or a friend have had there. Thanks.

I went there about 2 years ago. I took Automotive Technology, Chassis Fab, & Applied Business Management. I got accepeted into the Mercedes ELITE program and now I'm working as a tech in Beverly Hills.
The whole experience was pretty good but I didn't care much for Laramie. I grew up in southern California and it was a pretty big culture shock moving to a state with only 500,000 people. But you'll get over it once you meet people and get adjusted. The teachers at WyoTech are the best part of the school. Most of them have a good sense of humor and teach the material extremely well. Be aware that the school is very strict on the dress code, language, attendence, and shaving. It's really no big deal but some kids will bitch and complain. Overall I think it's the best auto school out there. I live with 3 guys that went to UTI and I don't envy them in the least. They don't have many good things to say about their school. Anything else you'd like to know? PS - During an interview with Mercedes Benz of Downtown LA one of the shop foreman said they prefer guys from WyoTech over UTI.

The one advantage UTI has over WyoTech is that the company that recruits students into Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Jaguar, & Porcshe are actually partners with UTI. More spots are available to UTI students which makes it harder for WyoTech kids to get in. Porcshe wasn't even available to WyoTech students because they only accept about 15-20 graduates a year, if my memory serves me right. But like I said before, I've talked with shop foremans and WyoTech has a better reputation for putting out well trained, reliable technicians. You probably can't go wrong with either school, I just think WyoTech is the better decision.

Re: automotive schooling (Wyotech)
how long has UTI been around? I believe Wyotech started in the 60's. Another thing I like about the school is that you can do refresher courses later on down the road for free. Wyotech also only takes a year to complete versus UTI. I'd like to try to get into the Audi program I think, but if anyone has any good points for going into one of the other manufacturers schools I'd like to hear them.

I went to Wyoming Technical Institute (as it was known then) in 1980. They've REALLY expanded!!!
I graduated from the collision repair course at Laramie, Wyoming. The instructors were top notch! I'm sure things haven't changed. They were still teaching metal-finishing techniques back then, not the beat-it-with-a-hammer-and-fill-it-with-plastic method of bodywork. The diesel tech class was sponsoring a diesel-powered dragster at the time. I'm sure there are still great techs immerging from the shops of Wyotech. |

I think there is a school out there for everyone. I don't think that one is necessarily better than the other but maybe one is a better fit for someone than the other. Obviously different programs are offered at different schools, like collision or high-performance or marine or motorcycle. I think it just depends on what you like! There are a lot of options out there. Its an exciting education!
