broke so soon?

I have a 93 accord ex. My wife was driving about 50 on hi-way Friday and engine died. Tow truck man said It looked like timming belt. The car has 148k on it and timing belt was changed at 80k. I was just barely startin to wonder when the next belt should be installed... Sure enuf when i tore into it....Belt was broke. I know there is about o chance there's no valve damage but if I replace belt I heard that you can check for problems with belt on ....so at least you know if head needs to be rebuilt w/o putting everything back together. Can someone walk me thru this process or tell me how to check for other damage before car is back together?.....Also is the head the only problem or can there be other issues and how much would it cost if I took head in and had someone else rebuild with me reinstalling everything? I am going to look closely at water pump as well is there anything else I should replace while everything is apart? Questions, Questions, Questions...any answers?

should have replaced it at 140k. you went 68k on the belt and suppose to replace belt every 60k. replace water pump.

if damage a lot and needs rebuild, probably cheaper to get used engine.

Re: broke so soon?

I have been told that since my timing belt broke on hi-way in my 93 accord ex and i tried to start several times(not knowing it was the belt) it will be more of a process than a belt that didn't break to align everything back up. I am ready to install new belt....most manuals assume belt did not break and its simply R&R....I don't want to miss any steps after going thru all this work....95% sure head is not damaged......I have several manuals but need some practical advice...........

Re: broke so soon?

This is far from the first time I've seen 60k quoted for the timing belt change schedule, and it's certainly better to be safe than sorry. But my (93) owner's manual says 90k. That's a pretty big difference.

You can be sure I'm leanin to that 60,000# now even though mine might have been out of the norm. We all have to use our own judgement I guess wether it's worth the risk!
