1989 SR5 V6 Starting Problems

Hey all,

Have an intermittent starting problem with my 1989 4Runner (169K miles)

Sometimes;
*When I turn the key nothing happens, I do hear a click when I turn the key.
*If I turn the key repeatedly (about 2 times per second, for about 3-4 seconds) it will usually start. I hear the click every time I turn the key.
*It usually happens when the engine is hot. Sometimes I lift the hood and pour cold water on the starter and ignition coil, it helps most times after a short wait.
*I know it's not the battery, because I had it tested.

I've had the truck for about 5 months, the previous owner was very meticulous about maintenance (he handed me a binder with everything he's had done to it, everything). The starter was replaced a year and half ago, but it doesn't say anything about the solenoid. I assume it was the whole thing.

Any thoughts? Right now it's an annoyance, it happens twice, maybe three times a week.

I have read about replacing the starter contacts, but I think this maybe above my level of experience. I'm looking to see if there is anything else that it maybe before forking over the cash for a complete starter replacement. Is it possible to have someone just replace the starter contacts?

All you can do is ask. Each mechanic has his own habits on repairs so you have to ask. Some prefer big jobs, some will do anything for repeat customers.

You can buy the contacts from Toyota, so they should install them.

yep try the contacts,check the cables for corrosion and get a haynes book from pep boys and do it yourself dont be afraid just do it, you'll learn something about your truck and its always feels better when you do it yourself.Just post questions here and the people will walk you through it...good luck

I also had a hard start problem with my 89 SR5.I would hear the click sound and it would not turn over.I ended up changing the starter contacts, but I did make sure the starter relay was also functioning properly.This relay provides the power to the starter solenoid.It is possible that the contacts inside this relay are burnt.

I believe the click you hear is the starter relay. If you don't hear a click, it could be alot of things, but if you hear a click and nothing happens, then it is likely the solenoid contacts since the relay is working.

Tapping the starter with a wrench or hammer is another way of checking the contacts. Tapping should get them working temporarily.
