Installed Timing Belt on 92 Accord 2.2 and now Have Idle problem... Help!
I Just changed my water pump, timing belt balance shaft belt and timing tentioners on my 92 honda accord. Everything went back together relitively smothly. When I started the car the idle went to 1500 RPM, so I attemted to dial in the timing with my timing light. After running for a few minutes the RPM's started to bounce from 1000 RPM to 2000 RPM. I decided to test drive the car around the block. The car had more than enough performance leading me to believe the timing was almost dead on. When I returned from the test drive the RPM's had returned to normal (700 RPM) like there was nothing wrong with the car. When the car cools down the RPM's jump to 1500 again. When I drive the car down the street the RPM's return to normal. I no longer have a problem with the RPM's bouncing around at idle, just idleing high before the car has been driven. There is a slight winding sound (sort of like a supercharger) thoughout the RPM range coming from the timing area. Is it possible I over tentioned the belts? My Hanes manuel said to turn the enging over 3 teeth on the camshaft pully and tighten the tentioner bolt. Doing this left the timming belt tentioned and the balance shaft, in my opinion, loose. I used the end of a rubber mallot to apply pressure on the tentioner and tightened the bolt. The belts were tentioned the same as say a serpenteen belt would be. I checked for vacum leaks... None. I am thinking about retentioning the timing belt with the timing cover on but I am afraid the balance shaft belt will become too loose. Any info would help.

Re: Installed Timing Belt on 92 Accord 2.2 and now Have Idle problem... Help!
your timing belt is too tight, pop off little rubber grommet in cover loosen bolt, turn crank bolt counterclockwise about a 1/4 turn and retighten bolt. it is not a serp belt, serp uses friction, timing belt has teeth. if your timming was off after belt replacement you might be of f a tooth on the cam gear (this happens to me every one in awhile), you might want to put the white notch (single notch next to three timing marks)on the crank in line with the timing tabs on the lower cover, loosen up the valve cover and remove bolts to pull the upper cover to be sure, good news is if it is off a tooth all you have to do is loosen the tentioner bolt pull up on the belt on the firewall side tighten bolt and you can move the belt unof to shift over a tooth. then loosen tensioner bolt turn cam gear clockwise to take out slack and retighten tensioner bolt, reassemble, and reset timing.

Thank you for your input. I will retention the timming belt and see what happens. I am almost dead sure the timing is on because the car performs better than before.

dosn't mean its dead on if you checked the timing and it was off you are probably off a tooth , its hard to tell on the hondas the gear says up but the head is on a slight angle make sure notches 90 degrees from up mark on both sides are aligned with top of head or notch on cam bearing cap behind gear in centerd directly behind up mark.
