Oil Consuption

I have an 89 toyota truck withthe 22 re engine. I had the engine completely rebuilt in 2001... However it seems to use oil at a rate or about a quart per oil change.

There are no visible leaks, little or no visible oil burning.

I have checked the gap on the valves.

My only other thoughts are a worn vavle guide (but the head was rebuilt) and a bad ring but I ran through the Break in procedures meticulously.

Any other thought or ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Oil Consuption

one quart every 3k miles is enough to live with I think. maybe a rind did not seat, or the the cylinders where not quite hones right, but a quart every 3k, well if there is no leaks and it does not smoke on startup, I would let that sleeping dog lie.

Oil to ya

Its actually more like 2 quarts per change....but do not see any oil in smoke at startup. Itsone of those things that when you take on a job that big it dissapointing to have missed soemthing. Not that I'm gonna tear the thing apart to fix a ring...just wanted to know if anyone has run into anything else that might cause the problem.

Re: Oil Consuption

If there are no leaks and no smoke at start up that pretty much means rings. on the consolation side, at of high perf. engines burn oil at about that rate as do most piston airplane engines. Pull your spark plugs and check the tips they will most likely give a clue as to what is happening. just remeber witch plug came from witch hole.
