My son just called me, he was stranded in his 95 5spd. Grand Am... I was pretty sure it was a shifter cable problem, said it was stuck in 2nd gear and the shifter won't move, side to side.
Well, I got there and to my relief at least the cable isn't broken! I found that the cable that moves when you move the shifter from front to back had popped off the shift fork on the top of the trans.! Looks like there is supposed to be a bushing and a snap type retainer of some kind there, but that is gone. I slipped the cable-end loop back over the fork, and it does shift and stay in place for the time being. Have to replace that bushing though, anyone ever bought a replacement part for that alone? Seems to me that you can't buy much for separate parts, but they will gladly sell you the entire cable assembly! Will have to wait till Mon. now of course...
