I have been working on changeing the timing belt in my 96 talon, the belt didnt break, but the tensioner pulley locked up which ruined the belt.
The big problem i have right now, is the fact the my dad moved the allignment of my cams and crank, getting these in time isnt the hard part. The hard part is... which marks on the cam do i allign(a mark on each side on cam sprocket) and how do I know when its on the compression stroke with no belt installed? Thanx in advanced Ive also posted the exact same post in the eagle talon forums. |

Re: Timing help
what you need to do is turn the crank shaft until your #1 pistion is at TDC... then line the marks up on the cam gears straight even with one another... i'd suggest getting a manual cause there are pictures and a step by step guide... cause if you have never done one before you should have someone there that knows what they are doing cause timing belt work on talons and eclipses are not easy to get right if you are not use to them!

Re: Timing help
The dowel pin that locates the cam gear to the cam will be at 12 oclock when they are lined up. Then get it so that a straight edge connects all 4 cam gear marks. If you get it lined up, but with the cam 180 degrees off, things will get real ugly, and you were smart to ask about this.

Thanx for any help guys,
however I do have a manual and ive looked at several others with no insight into which of the cam gear marks to line up. 95gsx seems like he's trying to give me good advice but i dont understand what hes talking about... dowel pin? what dowel pin? What i see is 2.0 front on one side of the gear and some other letters on the other ... do i need to align the cams so the words are right side up on both.. 1 upside down/1 rightside up? Need help please been vehicleless for MONTHS. Thanx again |

Thank you for replying talon007, however there is NO dowelpins on my cam gear, there are just regular bolts with washers.
This is a 1996 eagle talon ESI, maybe this will help? Maybe theres difrences throughout the models? http://www.vfaq.com/proj-pics/Tbelt/96NT-004.jpg this is the only picture i can ever find for timing the cams.. doesnt shine any light on which marks to align. |

Re: Timing help
Ok yes a 2G NT is different, from that pic you have there, there should be marks on the cam gears to line up, and there is none?

Re: Timing help
Yes there are marks, but there is marks on BOTH sides of both cams which means either 1 of them can be 180 degrees outa timeing when the marks are lined up.
Also if my valves happen to be bent what would i expect to happen when the car starts? thanx again |

Re: Timing help
Pull th valve cover. When both cams are in the right plavce for #1 to be at TDC, all intake and exhaust valve will be closed. So the cam followeres (or whatever the 420a uses) will be on the flat part of the cam lobes.

Re: Timing help
95 gsxracer i hade that same idea yesterday i pulled the valve cover off, set the cams to where all the #1 valves were closed and the next stroke would be exhaust. I figured this would be the only way to really set the cams on this engine.
However when I got everything set up i cranked the engine and to a nice shocking discovery instead of the exhaust comeing out the exhaust it backfired out of my intake... thus the question about what would i expect from bent valves.. My only theory is, i cranked the engine with it 180 degrees off and more than likly bent my intake valves or they were already bent open and the easyiest escape route for the fire was out the intake. Thanx for any help guys. if anyone else has any ideas or helpful tips, by all means post them please |
