95-99 Sunfire Questions

I know this might be a stupid thing to do, but Im gonna ask it anyway.

My girl is looking into buying a 95-99 sunfire, and she's only got like 4,000 max to spend.

- How reliable is the sunfire? I hear there are alot of problems, especially with ones with hight milage (over 100,000).

- Are they worth it? I mean if she can only afford one with higher miles, should she forget it all together or go for it -

- last, what type of things should she look for when buying one, like what should she check to make sure the car is running right and won't crap out anytime soon.

Thanks so much if u respond -

i bought a 1998 sunfire for $4980 and it had 52000 miles on it. It was in great condition (like new) and I bought it from a dealership. I haven't had any problems with it so far and i have only heard good things about them.

Re: 95-99 Sunfire Questions

I looked into it alot before I bought my sunfire. Its a 98. I looked in consumer reports and a few other mags and found that the sunfires are of the better quality in 98 and later.

Re: 95-99 Sunfire Questions

i have a 98 sunfire... i have had a trillion problems with it from tranny probs(twice at least) to i blew out my engine in reg highway driving... to a new water pump due to coolant leak to an alternater... and i only got it a year ago and it had just less than 100k kms on it, not to mention a recall not too long ago... you really need to look for how it runs and if it leaks stuff and really listen to it... otherwise i dont know... i love my car but i dont know if its worth the 10k htat was spent on it....

Re: 95-99 Sunfire Questions

I paid about the same for my 98 GT.
I just replaced the transmission on it (5spd), the gut at the tranny shop said it looked like the hardening came out of the gears.
Water pump has been replaced, but other than that the car has been good to me.
One big tip I can say is that if you hear a noise, get it checked out.

Re: 95-99 Sunfire Questions

I am really starting to wonder about these cars.
I was cruising last night and my new transmission crapped its pants.
No noise nothing. No neutral no reverse, feels like its stuck in second. Not even 1500km on the new transmission.
