Yea, I'm getting a GSX soon (hopefully) and I know that AWD is much different when launching than a FWD. I would also appreciate any tips on launching these monsters =)

floor it and let out the clutch (slowly, but not clutch spin slow... you'll figure it out) as it passes 4500-5000 RPM. That's my suggestion. When you hold the rpm at 5000 you are building no boost, where as flooring method may be a bit quicker. Shift at 7000 in 1st and 6000 in all other gears. The stock turbo drops boost fast in the upper range.

But I've seen a WRX STI hit rev limiter many times before he launched, impressive, but sounds kinda crazy to me.

i reamber reading an artical writen by kevin that explained how you need to find out what your wheel tourque crurves are to really understand how you car tranfure maxumum hp to the wheel at every shift. if i reamber right, it was on dsmtuner. its been a month or two.

Thats true, but for a T25 it's pretty much all the same. Power drops off after 6000 fast.

Re: How do you launch and when are the best shift spots in GSX
Joe described what I suggest for t25 cars. 7000 in first, and then 6k for the other gears. This alone droppd my times from 15 flat to 14.6 vs shifting at 7k in every gear!
The idea is to get rpm around 4500-5500, wether you jsut hold it there, floor it and try to time it right, or use a rev limiter to hold it there for you, and then dont dump the clutch. Slip it out. (better to wear the clutch a little faster than destroy tranny parts ) You'll release it fast to the point that it starts to make contact, then slowly release it the rest of the way. Might take a full second to let it up the rest of the way. The best way to learn is to go to the local dragstrip and try different things. Watch the 60 foot times to see what works best. Then do it over and over again until its second nature. After 2-3 years I was in the 1.6s, and now they are consistent 1.6s with occassional 1.5s. Just takes a long time. In my case, I have hundreds and hundreds of drag passes down. It doesnt happen over night, but you'll get significantly better after jsut a few nights at the track if you use your head, and pay attention. Have fun

Um if you have a T3/T04e turbo setup going, probably run all gears to redline in that case? Thought I'd ask, cause I may get a car with this setup and dunno when I will dyno it and so dunno the exact power curve on that sort of setup. From what I have heard is it will keeping building power til redline. |

Re: How do you launch and when are the best shift spots in GSX
I would go to 7500, no higher, regardless of what turbo you run. A big part of it is cams, and even more so a sheetmetal intake manifold. Cams and manifold push the torque band way up allowing you to shift higher. The turbo part is just to keep up with what the cams and mani flow
But on stock cams or even aftermarket cams and stock manifold, I would shift at 7500. Of course if you have the stock 7500 rpm revlimiter, you'll need to shift a little lower so you dont hit it.

Yeah I see what you mean about taking some time to learn. I took the GSX to Ontario Last night and at first I couldn't even get the damn thing to even take off. I released the clutch too fast and the car would bog and slowly start to go. Also I was reving up to 4000 instead off 4500-5500. Might I add, my clutch smelled like death. But after about 3 hours, I started to find out the spots and everything. I'd rev up to about 5000-5500 rpms and then slowly release that clutch then it's bye bye. I know my launch should still be better because I'm really inconsistant and i still sometimes bog the car. But I guess it just takes time. Especially considering the fact that I used to have an automatic mustang before the eclipse.

Re: How do you launch and when are the best shift spots in GSX
I haven't shifted any gear other than 1st and 2nd after 6000. Hardly ever get even 1st gear to 7000. I just don't make any power, and I'm paranoid too.

Re: How do you launch and when are the best shift spots in GSX
Oh yeah, I found that there is a way to know when you are slipping the clutch the right amount, or you are at least in the ballpark. After a asty launch I can sometimes faintly smell the clutch. If you can really smell it after the launch, you are slipping too much.
