Question '97 Gas pedal sticks from time to time

Is there anything I can do to fix the sticking gas pedal from time to time? It usually occurs after I stop at a red light, then it's like it's stuck, but when I force it down (about 3x normal force), it'd go down, as if it just broke free. It doesn't cause any problems but I don't like the sudden surge forward I get when I force the pedal down. It happens about 2-4 times a month.

Sounds like a dirty throttle body. Butterfly sticks in the goo. Just remove air intake hose and squirt it down with carb. cleaner, contact spray etc. and wipe it clean. Be sure to get back side of butterfly. Common problem! Good Luck JJ

Re: '97 Gas pedal sticks from time to time

Does anyone hav a picture, diagram, or a general description of the "air intake hose" area? I just needed to know what to look for. Already have the carb cleaner. Thanks.

1997Camry,

Try this link. It's for a V-6 but it is exactly the same information for an 4 cylinder and gives great detailed instructions on how to clean the throttle body.

1997Camry,

Sorry, I'm having trouble getting the link to work. Don't know what's wrong. Just go to 4x4wire.com and run a search for "throttle body cleaning" and it should be the first item that is listed. Click on that. I was able to get to it that way.

You're welcome. I remembered that site from a previous topic, but had a hard time finding it.

BTW, I checked and the only difference between my link and yours is a forward slash at the end.

I hate to be an ass, lol, but the difference is one's 'V' is capital, and one is lowercase in '30_V6'. In html capitalization makes a big difference.

This sticking throttle has happened to me in two different cars. A 90 Camry and am 89 Camry. Both times, it was the butterfly valve actually contacting the throttle body and getting stuck. Check to make sure the adjustment screw outside the throttle body is what is actually stopping the butterfly valve when it's closed. If it's contacting the inside of the throttle body, it will eventually cause a groove, too.

BTW, the 90 camry did have a slight groove in the throttle body. But after the adjustment, everything ran fine, with no more sticking throttle. The 89 was fixed too, but didn't get the groove.
