1991 axod-e transaxle

The car would only move in second gear and only at High rpms
and then the trany would "cut" off and start up again?

I have been informed that the planetary gear is probely broken.
however being adventurous I have taken the thing apart the only broken "thing" I found was a purple spring behind the cover one of many springs found there.

As you can tell from my desciptions above I am a novice with tranys
but it's just too darn exspensive to have fix in a shop{car is not worth the cost to repair}
so I was hopeing to find some ovious broken like the tourq. conv. or missing teeth on a gear.

Can anyone point me in a direction that may help

Does the ATF smell burned?

If not, the planetary gears should be ok. Also, if the thing will move at all, I doubt the planetaries are wasted.

Transgo sells an excellent upgrade kit that solves the AXOD-type problems, and a Google search will show the ATRA (?) catalogs, which are an exploded view of the trannies. Like the sheet that comes in a carb kit box.

ATRA = Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association. Or at least that's close.

Haynes sells a pretty good book on Ford Automatic Transmissions, too.
