Tansmission Slips

Have a 97 JGC Limited Orivis at 93,000 miles. Last year we noticed that the tranny would slip every once and awhile when driving down the road. We took it to Chrysler and had a rebuilt transmission put in last July as part of our extended warranty plan with Ford. Here we are less than a year out from it and the problem is starting all over again. The tranny is now warranteed by Chrysler, but I am trying to do my own research before I take it into them again and wait, what will probably be another 3 weeks or so, before I get it back. Any other reasons why it might be doing this.

I have a 95 Limited with now 160,000 miles. At around 100,000 - 110,000 I had to have my transfer case rebuilt. Somehow it had according to the dealer, no fluid in it at all. Not sure how that could have happened since I never noticed any fluid on the garage floor. I had noticed the same slipping problems. My transfercase for some reason has a long long history of problems. Needless to say, $2,300 and 1 1/2 years later, it was leaking. Given that it was up on a lift for 3 weeks the first time while they hunted for parts, I decided to just stay on top of the fluid level instead of risking losing the entire vehicle.

The dealer said at the time that Chrysler no longer manufactured the transfer case for that model and parts were very scarce. Take a look a www.drivetrain.com , they seem to have a good supply of parts and may be able to provide some insight into your specific problem.

Good Luck,

Updated info

Thanks for the reply... I have been doing more research and have found that my problem is not the transmission slippping - slipping is when it goes into idle and does not pick up the correct gear. No my problem is more of a "bump down" is the best way to describe it. It's an auto tranny and when driving down the road at about 50+ mph or so it will basically bump and continue on. No change in idle...at least that I'm aware of, happens so fast it's hard to tell... just a bump or thud felt throughtout the entire vehicle.

Why would a dealer put a rebuilt trany in rather than rebuilding the exsisting one, I would go to another dealer And it should not take 3 weeks to swap a tranny, most places send tranys out to another shop to repair, I made the mistake of letting a trany problem go to far and my warranty ran out it to was just slipping once in awhile and the milage was about the same the repair the dealer says he did held for about a year now i had to pay 1100.00 to get my tran rebuilt it took 3 days keep on em
