1966 302 Engine swap and engine purchase

I was wondering if a 302 with a T5 transmission will fit in a 1966 mustang engine compartment, and/or any problems that I might run into or parts that would need to be changed. This car currently has a 200 straight 6, but when I acquired it it had what I believe to be 289 motor mounts. I does, however, have 4 lug wheels.
Also, I was considering buying a 306 that was just rebuilt and has under 100 street miles on it. This engine has been built for nitrous, but has never seen a drop. All engine parts are new with the exception of pistons (which are in good shape) and the block. It has a Holley 650 cfm Dominator carb, a 512 lift cam.
It runs a little lean and owner says that a 750 cfm would be better. It dynoed at around 390 horse and 420 torque. Owner says that he has $2,000 into the engine. What would be a good offer to make on an engine and transmission setup like this?

Your responses are greatly appreciated!

He wont get what he has in the motor back out of it. How many rpms is he turning with this motor? That will help you to know how long it will last. Also was that flywheel or rwhp? If it was rwhp then what trans did he test with? That will tell you alot about his drivetrain efficiency. If its auto it will pull more power than your T5, depending on how big it is, it may pull alot more.
Yes if the car had a 289 in it then a 302 will fit just fine. The T5 Im not sure about, may have to customize the tranny mount a little.

The power reading was at the crank i believe with a T5 tranny. I am not sure about the rpms, but I he took me for a ride in it and it seems pretty smooth running and runs quick. He is building a bigger engine and wants to sell the 306.
Thanks for the info.

Re: 1966 302 Engine swap and engine purchase

I found out that the T5 tranny has 2,000 miles on it. I was thinking of offering him 2k for both the engine and transmission. Is this a fair offer? I have not bought an engine from anyone before and I don't really know what something like this is worth.
Any comments are appreciated.

Unless he has the dyno sheet in hand, I would not take any given numbers as fact. With those numbers, there had better be aluminum heads on the engine, or those numbers are not for that engine. The owner is clueless if he says that the lean running is because it has a 650 and not a 750. You are best off to find a V-8 donor car for all of the suspension parts for your swap.
What was the clearance between the pistons and cylinder wall? What pistons are in there? Factory forged, cast, or aftermarket forged or cast?
I would just pass on the motor unless there are receipts from a reputable shop where the work including assembly was done.

Aluminum heads are not a must for 390hp and 420'lbs. The roush series heads from World are not aluminum and are capable of much more than those #s.

This is a 302, and probably stock pistons.........Roush heads aren't on the engine.

Im just saying aluminum heads arent a must to hit 400hp. I personally helped build a 400sbc that dyno'd at 426hp with ported stock heads.
