Subwoofer Box Breaking

I have 2 10' subs in a dual box. I took one of them out today because it wasn’t working and the box on the inside had/did break. Its only little pieces but now my sub doesn’t screw down and have a tight fit. I even tried making new holes but the wood kept breaking. So my question is do I need to get a new box or is this okay. I don’t have a top of the line system so if I loose a little bass its okay.

Re: Subwoofer Box Breaking

Sounds like your box is made of particle board and proably thin. If you do not want to build a new box you can put a new face on that one. Remove the covering (carpet or whatever) and cut a new face foor it. I would recommend using 3/4" MDF. Glue and screw that to the top of your old box, cut the sub holes, and there you go. Not only is the box repaired but with a dbl baffle a bit stronger.

Also if you go that route make sure you clean off any glue and carpet residue left on the box before attaching the new baffle.

Re: Subwoofer Box Breaking

are you just screwing straight into the wood or are you predrilling the holes?

Any wood will split if you just try to screw straight into it that close to the edge without predrilling

Re: Subwoofer Box Breaking

I did pre drill the holes so it wouldnt split. The wood isnt splitting, the enclosure is breaking off into little chuncks that is in the inside. Then it doesnt sound good because i have the pieces rattling when the subs hit. I dont know how expensive the box was because I bought it from a guy at school but it is thick so its not a total p.o.s.

Re: Subwoofer Box Breaking

What parts are breaking off?

I'm sorry, I've just never seen a box start breaking. From what you're saying it sounds like your box is just disintegrating.

Re: Subwoofer Box Breaking

Particle will board will do exactly that...break off into little pieces. Especially if the screws are put very close to the sub opening. It can and does often happen even with a predrill. Did the box get wet?

Re: Subwoofer Box Breaking

sr20de4evr, there is the 2 openings for the subs. On the inside of the those openings (not the carpeted side) is where little 1 inch pieces are breaking off. But according to SickVette this is normal, and no the box didnt get wet.

Re: Subwoofer Box Breaking

Not normal...it just happens. Particle board is the best at staying together. It is just a bunch of little pieces of wood and sawdust pressed and glued together.
